"As One" Marriage & Relationship Program
“As
One”
Forty-three percent of first marriages in United States ends
in separation or divorce within 15 years (Kopala & Keitel,
2003). A spouse that comes from a divorced home has doubled
the chances for divorce and both partners that come from a
divorced home has tripled their chances for divorce (Stanley
& Fincham, 2002).
Seventy percent of children from divorced homes see it as a
solution for unhappy marriage and they have a harder time
with educational, occupational, and financial attainment.
There are benefits not only to the
married couple
for being
married, but benefits to children because they have better
health, more mentally stable, and have both functional role
models. Schools benefit because they have the support of
both parents, less behavior issues, and more academic
success. The community benefits because there are cleaner
neighborhoods, less crime, and better housing. This flows
over to our society which will eventually produce future
leaders.
Gary and Terri have been certified to teach Basic Training
for Couples, through the Georgia Healthy Marriage
Initiative. They have also written and taught other
relationship material.
The following training is available to church groups,
agencies, organizations, weekend retreats, one-on-one
counseling, and small group settings.

Prevent Child Sexual Abuse
We know that children are important to all
faiths. In fact, most place the utmost importance on raising and
protecting our children. But consider this. Did you know that 1 in 4
girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before their 18th
birthday? Or that the median age for reported sexual abuse is 9
years old. And incredibly, that there are over 39 million survivors
spread across all socioeconomic classes!
Unfortunately, pedophiles search out places where children are and
this makes faith organizations a prime target. They take advantage
of the taboo nature of the subject, something that no one wants to
discuss, and they thrive on this silence. So ask yourself, has my
house of worship done enough? Are we prepared to deal with the
physical and emotional pain, the healing, or the high costs
associated with child sexual abuse, should it occur? Have we
developed the tools and a plan to prevent or address this potential
problem?
Don’t be like so many others and make the
mistake of thinking that this can’t happen in my church or temple.
It can!
